12 DAYS OF BDSM CHRISTMAS 2016: DAY #5 ‘I Kissed A Girl’ by Katy Perry

Today I want to talk about the song “I Kissed A Girl” by Katy Perry and the reception to the themes of that song from the public.

Granted the song came out eight years ago so I am a little late to the party, but I was looking up Katy Perry for inclusion in a future story and something I like to do before greeting the day is reading the history of anything, movies, world history and in this case it was the creation and reception of her hit song.

Now, there are two sides to the argument, the first being that the song was raised to gain attention without addressing the larger themes of homosexuality, such as the objectification that comes with it.

The other side is that it is a sensationalist piece. It’s there to hyper-sexualize homosexuality through the use of a lesbian-friendly tune.

And then, of course there’s this idea that the entire content of the song is wrong, homosexuality is a sin, and all that jazz.

To all of this, I say that the song is just that. A song. It’s harmless, catchy and just playful in a child-like kind of way.

Does it have a responsibility to the people? I don’t think so. The song clearly states the wrong / right aspect while being in the process of experimentation. True, it’s not by and large dealing out the right from wrong but it is just a pop song. It’s trying to have fun and good or bad, mayhaps someone will identify with it.

But people being people read too much into it. If they don’t have a problem with homosexuality, it’s a problem with how it treats the issue of homosexuality. But I Kissed A Girl isn’t and shouldn’t be in that realm of argument. It’s a, in my opinion, case of people looking for a fight.

As for the lesbian themes, what of them? That love / affection is different but it’s a different kind of beautiful. We need to see more of that love around. If the song leads to someone questioning their sexuality, excellent. Think about it. Because you get one life, don’t close the door to new experiences. Be yourself. Do not care what people think.

Another way to look at it is this: It’s a time capsule – for the listener – to reflect on about their own lives as a teenager. This magical time when you were invincible.
